Creating a peaceful place to rest

We all know how important it is to get a good night's sleep; it's essential to our overall health and wellbeing. And I wholeheartedly believe that part of getting that good night's rest comes from creating a peaceful place to relax. A place that really lets you unwind. A place where you feel like you can let all the stresses of the day go.
That may look like many different things to different people. For me, I always sleep better and feel more relaxed when I'm getting into a freshly made bed or a clean set of sheets. You breathe in that fresh floral scent and it's like all your cares wash away. Now, I am pretty terrible at making our bed every morning; it actually rarely happens. It's something I would like to be better at. And we obviously don't wash our sheets every day. SO, we have to come up with other ways to make our space feel relaxing.
The majority of that comes from decor.
Right now, our space is pretty basic and there are things that I would love to add, but I kind of find it peaceful to keep it simple.

Our light-colored bedding, lamps and pillows came from Target. I'd link them, but they're all 3+ years old and don't exist any more. I made the headboard out of 1"x4" boards several years ago. It's just screwed together and then white-washed. I bought the side tables off of Etsy when I first moved to Springfield and they're probably one of my favorite pieces in our house. They're very distressed and imperfect...and I love them. Lastly, I DIY'd the window pane above the headboard. I bought the window from a flea market, grabbed some mason jars from Walmart, snipped some *literal* weeds out of the ditch next to my house (lol) and threw it together! It was kind of a "wing it" type of project, but it's probably one of my favorite DIY's to date.
I'm not telling you this because I think you'll want to implement what we've done...not at all. I'm the furthest thing from what I would call a "design expert". But I'm telling you this so you know that creating your space is just that...making it YOUR space. And making sure it reflects you and your style is exactly how you make sure it's peaceful and relaxing.
For me, a light and airy space is right up my alley. That's what makes me feel at home. So, I'm going to pull some of the top tips and products I've found to help create that space. If that's what you're looking for, keep reading. If not, thanks for joining me thus far and stay tuned for many more things to come on Unapologetically Blog!
Back to creating that light and airy space:
1. Declutter
This is always, always, ALWAYS number one on the list. If you feel like your space, no matter what it is, isn't speaking to you or isn't making you happy...declutter. Clean. Organize. As I said previously, I always feel better/more at peace when I'm crawling into a made bed. It's something so simple that can dramatically change how you feel. Take time to simplify your room to give you that light and airy feel you're searching for.
2. Keep it light
This is probably obvious...but in order to create a light and airy space, you want your decor and bedding to be light and airy. This is something I would like to update in our space. I love everything about it except the orange and yellow pillows. I would love to switch those out for something much softer and more neutral, like these amazing options from Target:
Using neutrals in your actual bedding makes it very easy to add pops of color elsewhere; it's easy to coordinate. Right now, I'm really being pulled towards soft blues, pinks and greens. These are color options that are very easy to tie back to each other; they compliment each other very well. So if you stick to those colors, it'll be pretty easy to pick simple decor that works together.
3. Use complimentary colors
A great way to compliment the light colors you're using on your walls and in your bedding is through wood tones. There are so many cute, unique "bohemian" options out there today that can easily add style as well as function to your room. Plus they come in these beautiful light wood tones that work very well with lighter neutrals and pastels. This is actually something I do enjoy about our room...the wood tones we've incorporated. If you're still looking for the perfect piece to add to your space, here are some pretty great options:
4. Find a statement piece
For decor purposes, you don't need a ton in the bedroom (in my opinion). I think it's perfect to have one larger statement piece and then a few smaller ones that can compliment it. Our statement piece is a very large vintage mirror that I believe actually came from my grandma. I painted it orange back in high school, and it's still that color. This is also something I would probably like to update sometime in the near future, but I really love the piece. We have it nestled between the two windows in our bedroom and it really adds a nice "pop" as you walk in. A large mirror is the perfect way to create a statement in the bedroom, plus it's obviously very functional. Here are some great options:
Keeping your space light and airy can come with very minimal effort, which is part of why I love this trend so much! There's not a ton of color-coordinating that has to go on; as long as you stick with lots of neutrals and lighter colors, you're all set! On top of that, I really believe keeping your bedroom simple can truly free your mind of all the clutter it encounters on a daily basis. You want to walk into a space where you feel like you can breathe easier...and a light, airy, clutter-free bedroom is the PERFECT place to create that for yourself. If there's any room in your house that should be kept 100% stress-free, it would be the bedroom.
Let's keep it that way.
